The Merkur allows a wet shaver to adjust the blade gap of the razor as it sits in the head mount to create the right angle to closely cut his particular beard thickness. The adjustment also allows shavers to control how aggressive the razor cuts the hair on the face, which is an advantage to those with more sensitive skin.
The result of the adjustment offered by the Merkur design and the fact that it utilises standalone safety blades, creates an incredibly close shave and a much better level of accuracy when sculpting a beard or moustache, when compared to disposable razors or cartridge razors.
Other advantages of the Merkur razor over disposable and cartridge types include cost and value for money over the long-term. If you consider that a Merkur will last a lifetime, all the user has to do is purchase safety blades to use with the Merkur, as and when required. These can be original Merkur-made blades or other types of safety blades made to fit the Merkur models from all of the other leading razor blade manufacturers.
The Merkur was originally invented and manufactured by Emil Hermes in Solingen, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. In 1896, Emil Hermes began producing precision metal instruments, knives, and razors, later patenting the Slant Razor in 1916. The brand name Merkur is named after the German word for Mercury, the Roman God equivalent of the Greek God Hermes.
From a manufacturing point of view, Merkur safety razors are made from aluminium, stainless steel, brushed steel and chrome with some more exclusive versions available in precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum. Merkur’s come as either two or three piece models and with regular or long handles featuring a range of grip options, all of which are interchangeable with the heads. Handle grip options include rubber coated, knurled and ribbed grips, with some older versions of the handles also made from rarer materials such as Ivory.
Also widely available is the popular Merkur Futur model, which offers the same style of shave but has a much more contemporary design. The Merkur Futur is both stylish and practical, with a more modern look and feel. Within the innovative design, the proximity of the blade to the razor's safety bar on the head can be adjusted, allowing for a close, comfortable shave with fewer post-shave pimples and instances of razor rash for those users with sensitive skin.
All modern Merkur safety razors are built with precision engineering to the highest quality, while the older more antique models are a delight to own and use. Novice Merkur users might find it a little strange at first and might need to make multiple subtle head position adjustments until finding the right position for their beard and skin type. However, its well worth the effort, as once you’re used to the Merkur, you’ll find that it provides a much more consistent shave when compared to more modern metal or plastic types of disposable safety razor.

Here’s something that I feel I need to share and it’s quite amazing.
I’m 4 weeks in on using RéVive Perfectif Even Skin Tone Cream and RéVive Perfectif Even Skin Tone Serum and already I'm noticing serious pigment reduction in the dark spots on my forehead and overall skin texture on my face. This is really the best skin spot remover that I’ve tried. Seriously.
As a “man of a certain age” and a past that included spending many sunny days at the beach, I’ve developed dark spots on the sides of my forehead, above the eyebrow area and cheeks. I’ve been to dermatologists and have spent thousands of dollars on laser treatments to reduce the intensity of the dark spots and smooth out and tighten up the surface. I’m finding the results that I’m getting from ReVive to be the same, if not better than the stinging and painful results of the laser.
Although the directions say to use morning and night, I’ve been using it only in the morning. Mostly, because I can be lazy with my nighttime skin regimen. And with only using it one time a day, I’m still getting some incredible results. My skin surface is smoother and the spots are so much lighter. If you’re used to buying drugstore skincare brands, you might get sticker shock with this brand, but the way I look at it, the price is way less than a trip to the dermatologist for some laser work and the results have been great.
Here’s a tip, and this goes for all high-end skincare products. If you have a hard time justifying spending a lot of cash on a skin cream, think of it as a “gift to yourself” in this way. Take your credit card points and get gift cards to Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus or Nordstrom’s and use the gift cards to buy your skin care products. Trust me, it’s a less painful purchase.
I’m also trying out ReVive’s Intensité Moisturizing Lip Balm and I’m loving that too. I’ll write a separate blog post about this one.

Celebrity groomer Sonia Lee created the look for Neil Patrick Harris at the Oscars using Montez Renault for his skin and Leonor Greyl products for his hair. “For Neil’s look, we wanted to him looking as easy and natural as possible but still classic and sexy. He’s wearing this great custom Brunello Cucinelli grey cashmere tux with a satin shawl collar. Before we started, I had Neil cleanse his face with Montez Renault Facial Cleanser. Then I began by applying Tom Ford Anti-Fatigue Eye Treatment around the eye contour. Next, I applied Montez Renault Facial Moisturizer on his skin with a foundation brush. I used the brush so it ensures an even application. I massaged in the moisturizer with my fingers after to ensure that it absorbed really well. I loved this moisturizer, its so refreshing and the scent is amazing. It absorbs really quickly and is really light which is what most men prefer when using a moisturizer. I went back over his t-zone with Murad Face Mattifier to tamp down any shine and make sure he was camera ready. We also used Collyre Bleu Eye Drops so that his eyes look brighter and wouldn’t get dry when he’s on the red carpet. To finish off, I applied Montez Renault Moisturizing Body Lotion to his arms, hands, everywhere to keep his skin looking moisturized and healthy. For his hair, I started by warming up Leonor Greyl Éclat Naturel in my hands and applied it evenly and lightly all over his hair. This styling cream is a really great product because it gives the hair a little shine and makes it look really finished. Then I used a flatiron to straighten out any flyaways and went back with Leonor Greyl Baume Bois de Rose (launching April 2015) and used my fingers to create a bit of separation for a sexier look. The products smell amazing and so refreshing which is really great!” Before Neil ran on stage in just his tighty-whities, he had to strip down super-fast to his underwear and Sonia had just enough time to apply Montez Renault Moisturizing Body Lotion on him. She loves the scent and the fact that it is light and non-greasy, plus it made him feel like he was wearing something!

Men, now more than ever, are becoming more aware and accepting of the necessity of a proper grooming routine. Gone are the days when it was seen as “un-manly” to buy and use products made specifically for guys – most men realize that it’s very important. You take good care of your body-why not take care of your face? Nowadays, guys go back and forth between having a beard or stubble and being clean-shaven. Regardless of your current look, your facial skin needs regular attention! It can be daunting to navigate the basics of skincare and shaving do’s and don’ts but, as a facial hair expert and author, I have explored different techniques, heard every myth about hair growth and removal and seen all the trends. The most important components to keeping your skin looking its best through all ages and seasons, is a grooming regimen that includes great products and technique. I like to break down men’s grooming in three primary steps: cleanse, shave and finish:
Start with the “software”, a.k.a. your grooming products. The first step of the skincare process should always be cleansing! According to a study from Dove Men+Care, almost half of U.S men never use face wash. Your body bar soap is not a sufficient substitute. The skin are your face needs to treated with a gentle, yet effective cleanser that mildly cleans and protects, like the Dove Men+Care Hydrate+ Face Wash.
Men are always looking for ways to improve their shaving technique to get the closest shave and combat common concerns like irritation and razor burn. (Even if you have a beard, sideburns or stache, you still need to keep your facial hair margins clean and tidy.) The products you use to prep your skin are crucial to achieve your best shave. First, apply a soothing shave product like Dove Men+Care Hydrate+ Shave Gel. The rich, creamy lather provides lubrication for the closest shave and is gentle enough for everyday use. For the least irritating shave, be sure to use a light touch, gliding the blade with the grain (never against) following the direction your hair grows, and try to make fewer passes –if you need to go back over a spot, make sure you always apply more shaving gel. About the “hardware”: Remember to replace your razor every five to seven uses and, to prevent dullness, towel dry excess moisture from the blade after each use. A common misconception is the more blades on your razor, the better. In fact, razors with fewer blades cause less irritation and are much easier on your wallet!
The last step, moisturizing with a face lotion, is imperative regardless of your skin type. As men age, they are increasingly prone to dry, flaky skin. All the sweating at the gym, frequent shaving and exposure to the elements, is wear-and-tear on your face. A non-greasy, fast-absorbing face lotion, such as Dove Men+Care’s Hydrate+ Face Lotion is perfect for everyday care. This dermatologist tested product also contains Broad Spectrum SPF 15 to help prevent sun damage.

Driving a razor over the body is a lot different than shaving your face... and the razor you use should be different too. The light weight handle and anti-slip grip of the Body Razor gives you control even in the shower while the pivoting head maintains excellent blade contact over the body for a new kind of smoothness.
Here are a few tips from Master Barbers on shaving:
- Shave during or after the shower. The steam helps prepare the skin for shaving and helps make the body hair a little easier to cut.
- After shaving sensitive areas, use moisturizers which are soothing and calming to the skin and will help to prevent irritation.
- To enhance your body soap experience, instead of using your hands, try lathering up with a shaving brush. Shaving brushes help build a great lather and lift the body hair.
The Art of Shaving's Body Razor is available at The Art of Shaving stores and online.

I'm into my new gym shorts from a new brand called Chubbies. Ok, think old-school Olympic and retro basketball shorts from the 70's and 80's designed with modern technology that keeps the boys in place and the skin dry. Bring it on with a pair of mid-calf socks or even a pair of no-shows and the look is rockin'. These comfortable and light weight shorts are perfect for outside the gym and just hanging out too. Can't wait for the summer to wear them with a pair of flip-flops. The cut is different than most work out shorts — a little shorter— just try them for your self. I bet you'll love them too! Check out all the colors! ChubbiesShorts.com
