Saturday 12/26: Post-holiday gallivanting…

I popped into the Space NK shop in Bloomingdale’s (Soho) and stocked up on some goodies to help put this decade behind me and get 2010 started on the right track. On my list: NIA24 Eye Repair Complex and Caudalie VINEXPERT Anti-Ageing Serum. I also picked up a skin cleanser that I’m going bonkers over. Its called EVE LOM Cleanser.

And, bt dubs, the Croation-American sales guy at Space NK had a really impressive knowledge of skin care as well as some amazing skin color — he said it was a spray-on tan. This dude was fun and just lives for skin care.

It’s fairly obvious EVE LOM Cleanser is marketed to women but I think a guy would be comfortable using it too, although it’s a bit pricey and different from most cleansers a guy might use.

How to do it:
Massage a small amount onto the face and neck. The cleanser will remove all forms of dirt and grime from the skin.

Wet the muslin cloth (it comes with the cleanser) with warm water. Press the cloth onto the face and neck for a few seconds. The heat will soften the skin and open the pores, allowing the aromatic oils to cleanse the skin.

Fold the cloth into a square and work it in small, circular movements across the face and neck to remove all traces of cleanser.

The muslin exfoliates the skin surface and encourages blood circulation, leaving the skin feeling exceptionally smooth. It's a pretty amazing experience and the result is long lasting.

A new favorite of mine is a moisturizing/anti-aging system from the French skin care line ClarinsMen. Thompson Chemists — a True "Mom and Pop" Pharmacy



One of my favorite parts of a European trip is checking out the local pharmacies — always on the hunt for new and unusual skincare products and fragrances. Paris and London have some of the best. When I’m there, I usually stock up on things I won’t find in New York — until now. I recently discovered a “mom and pop” pharmacy in the heart of Soho that carries some of the best (and hard to find) niche brands of skin/hair care for men and women. The shop is called Thompson Chemists, located at 137 Thompson Street, tucked away between West Houston and Prince Street. This is a tiny storefront that is packed with some of the best of the best. A refreshing alternative to Duane Read, Rite Aid and Walgreens. Gary and Jolie, the owners, and their staff, are friendly and informative and the place rocks a real neighborhood vibe.



Some of the brands that caught my eye:
NUXE Paris Soft-Skin Booster Body Scrub (a gentle moisturizing scrub that’s great for dry winter skin) and 24-HR Nutri-hydrating Body Lotion (excellent body moisturizer) are both quite nice.


Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream. "The #1 selling medicated, vitamin-enriched skin cream in Japan." I use this as a hand moisturizer. Really good stuff!

Black Pearl Contouring Face & Eye Cream Serum
This line uses a combination of pearl powder, seaweed and Dead Sea minerals. An excellent moisturizing cream with an extraordinary light texture. The cream is Black Pearl's #1 seller.

They also stock a fabulous French hair care line called Leonor Greyl. Yup, these are the products that celebrity hairstylist Andy Lecompte used on Madonna during her 2009 Sticky & Sweet tour. ‘nuff said.

Also in the line-up; a nice selection of Roger & Gallet as well as one of the top men’s lines from the U.S. — Baxter of California.

So if you’re in the hood, stop by and say ‘hi’ to Gary and the crew. Thompson Chemists is a real NYC find!

Diptyque Philosykos

One of my favorites. Warm, fresh, masculine, slightly sweet and charming… that’s a good description of Diptyque's Philosykos. Imagine the air of a fig grove on a hot summer Mediterranean day. Refreshing. The scent is mildly sweet and creamy with a lot of green notes and a slightly woody-earthy base. A perfect and unexpected holiday scent.

I know what boys like. I know what guys want.

Fellas, if you want your partner to find you more attractive, you might start grooming a little more below the neck, not to mention your eyebrows, ears and nostrils. And your "other half” should speak up about what they think looks good. Odds are you will listen.

Those are some of the key findings in a survey released by Remington Products, a leader in men’s grooming and shaving tools. The nationwide poll asked 435 males about their personal grooming habits and 440 females about what male grooming styles they find the most attractive. The results: both men and women prefer a clean-shaven face and said grooming is key to making a first impression. More than half the women (57 percent) think poor grooming is a major turn off – if not a total deal-breaker.

But the sexes are at odds about how much to trim. For example:
Back hair – Nearly three-quarters of the women (71 percent) prefer men at least trim their backs to avoid looking like Neanderthals, and 33 percent would prefer a complete shave. Three-quarters of the men, however, said they don’t.
The butt – Eighty-three percent of women think men should do a little neatening back there, too, but nearly two-thirds of the men (63 percent) said they don’t.
Ears, eyebrows and nose hair – Forty-four percent of women find it troublesome when this hair is left untouched, but nearly a quarter of the men (24 percent) said grooming there isn’t even a factor in whether they think they look their best.
Chest – More than half the women (53 percent) who are casually dating or divorced think a man should at least give his chest a simple trim so it doesn’t look like a sweater. Overall, 40 percent of the women agree. However, 43 percent of the total women surveyed prefer men keep all their chest hair, considering it a sign of masculinity. And 17 percent want a smooth chest without a single hair. For the men, 83 percent said they have just let their chest hair grow.
The, um, groin – Sixty percent of the women who are casually dating said there should be some trimming around the groin, as did more than 56 percent of the women who are younger than 40. Of the total women surveyed, 42 percent prefer that look, but another 42 percent think any grooming down under would comprise a guy’s manliness. The other 16 percent? They’d like it clean as a whistle. Nearly two-thirds of the men (63 percent) said they’re still as hairy as God made them.

One key take away from the survey: men and women should tell each other what styles they think look best. Fifty-two percent of the men said they would consider shaving if it was important to their significant others, and 34 percent of the women said their men do, in fact, need to spend more time grooming. Yet one in five (21 percent) of the women said they wouldn’t broach the topic to avoid hurting feelings.

To test different grooming and hair styles, Remington has created the Face of Success Challenge, an online game centered on creating a “look” or “style” with the help of various Remington and grooming shaving tools. In the game, guys create their own avatar by choosing from a combination of hair styles and facial hair looks then try their skills with the game’s female characters, including the fitness instructor, the blonde bombshell and the girl next door. While playing the game, guys have a conversation with the women, gauge the responses and see how much face time they get. Afterward, a “wingman” offers tips on what might have worked better, including suggestions on how to improve their look with help from Remington.
