All About Eve

Not this one…

This one…

Saturday 12/26: Post-holiday gallivanting…

I popped into the Space NK shop in Bloomingdale’s (Soho) and stocked up on some goodies to help put this decade behind me and get 2010 started on the right track. On my list: NIA24 Eye Repair Complex and Caudalie VINEXPERT Anti-Ageing Serum. I also picked up a skin cleanser that I’m going bonkers over. Its called EVE LOM Cleanser.

And, bt dubs, the Croation-American sales guy at Space NK had a really impressive knowledge of skin care as well as some amazing skin color — he said it was a spray-on tan. This dude was fun and just lives for skin care.

It’s fairly obvious EVE LOM Cleanser is marketed to women but I think a guy would be comfortable using it too, although it’s a bit pricey and different from most cleansers a guy might use.

How to do it:
Massage a small amount onto the face and neck. The cleanser will remove all forms of dirt and grime from the skin.

Wet the muslin cloth (it comes with the cleanser) with warm water. Press the cloth onto the face and neck for a few seconds. The heat will soften the skin and open the pores, allowing the aromatic oils to cleanse the skin.

Fold the cloth into a square and work it in small, circular movements across the face and neck to remove all traces of cleanser.

The muslin exfoliates the skin surface and encourages blood circulation, leaving the skin feeling exceptionally smooth. It's a pretty amazing experience and the result is long lasting.

Season's Groomings at Roberto Novo Salon

The Situation:
You’re in NYC looking for that perfect haircut for the holidays…. or really any time of the year.

Where to go:
Roberto Novo Salon
45 Christopher Street, NYC
212 620-7073

Roberto Novo has been working with hair for over three decades. He has the passion of a hotshot editorial stylist – but he lives for cutting and sculpting the hair and is known for giving cuts that last.

The buzzing atmosphere of the salon allows for intimate conversations and consultations between you and the stylist, but generally merges into interesting conversations that include fashion tips (Calvin Klein and Hal Rubenstein are long-time friends and clients) and sometimes politics (one client was a journalist who covered Michael Jackson’s funeral and was explaining the journalistic frenzy of the Prince of Pop’s gathering).

Roberto can literally sculpt a shaggy, long, grown-out, layered cut into a chiseled and versatile shorter style — and with the tousle of a few strategic hairs and a little pomade, he can turn a Rocker into a hip businessman. Roberto’s cuts last and are crafted with charm and heart.

Extra Credit:
Roberto has studied and trained with some of the top stylists and academies across the globe like Vidal Sassoon, Tony and Guy, Oribe, Pierre Alexandre and worked with fashion giants as their personal stylist and with their runway shows for Calvin Klein, Gianni Versace and Dolce Gabbana in NY, Milan and Paris. He has worked directly with Miguel Romano, Eva Peron’s beauty guru and worked on videos with Britney Spears, Fergie and Grace Jones to Diana Degarmo from America’s Got Talent. He is proud to say that Versace said it was the best cuts of his fashionable life.

Men’s haircuts are $55. A woman's haircut with Roberto is an affordable $150 for a master hairdresser – others charge a months rent.

Man's Best Friends from Origins

Something tells me Tiger Woods will be getting coal in his stocking this year… if only he were able to keep his pants on and his zipper zipped, he might have received this lovely set of full and travel sized essentials from Origins…perfect for the man on the go! The gift set is called Man’s Best Friends.

Get the mistletoe ready without the risk of whisker burn by starting with a good shave. Blade Runner Energizing Shave Cream carries slick emollients like Kukui Nut Oil, Soybean Oil and other plant-based protectors to help glide the razor and give a close friction-free shave. Follow it up with Fire Fighter — nature’s moisturizing rescue unit of soothing Chamomile, Cucumber and Winterbloom leave skin calm and kissable. And that's the goal of good skin care, right? Make it kissable.

This is a wonderful gift for any guy who is into a good shave. I saw the gift set at the Origins store on 5th Avenue in NYC. It comes beautifully packaged and boxed for the holidays.

$37.50 and available at

ClarinsMen Anti-Aging Skin Care

A new favorite of mine is a moisturizing/anti-aging system from the French skin care line ClarinsMen. This year ClarinsMen expanded it’s product line by introducing ClarinsMen Age Controlthese hard working products are the real deal, taking men’s skin care to a whole new level. The ClarinsMen Age Control line is for a guy who appreciates the results of good skin care while enjoying a simple and easy maintenance regimen. I’ve been using the face cream and eye balm for a few weeks now and I’m already noticing an increased firmness and smoother texture to my skin. Love it. The scent is neutral, clean, fresh and unobtrusive so it works well with any cologne or fragrance.

Why use this? As we get older, the first signs of aging tend to appear around the eyes, usually dark circles and crow’s feet, followed by a loss of firmness around the chin and neck. You might even notice your collar size increasing. Because a man’s skin is thicker and oilier than a woman’s skin, it is also more susceptible to deeper set wrinkles. ClarinsMen Line Control Cream is formulated to minimize the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles while firming and moisturizing skin. ClarinsMen Line Control Eye Balm is made to smooth lines and crow’s feet while reducing the appearance of dark circles and under-eye puffiness caused from aging. Both products are designed to firm up the skin, fade the furrows between the brows and reduce the formation of a double chin and heavy jaw line. Both are applied in the morning and at night.

ClarinsMen Line Control Cream
$52 for 1.7 oz.

ClarinsMen Line Control Eye Balm
$35 for .7 oz.

ClarinsMen Line Control Eye Balm and Line Control Cream are available at department stores and specialty stores.

Dreaming of a White Christmas with Chanel

The classic crisp-yet-sexy men’s scent has been re-imagined by CHANEL master perfumer Jacques Polge. The ultra-modern ALLURE HOMME ÉDITION BLANCHE has a warm, rich base of milky sandalwood, plus the spicy additions of ginger and purified Haitian Vetiver. The zip of Sicilian lemon and smoothness of Madagascan vanilla make this masculine scent a well-rounded pleasure trip for the senses.

3.4 oz. $75.00
1.7 oz. $55.00

HUGO Element Makes Any Song Smell Better

Rock on brother... Here's a great gift idea that sounds good and smells great! This holiday season, the fantastic urban fragrance, HUGO Element, is hooking up with iTunes to add a music soundtrack to this fresh, creative, inspiring and masculine fragrance.

HUGO Element and iTunes rock!

HUGO Element is a modern take on men’s fragrance — inspired by the four elements. The creative starting point was the scented interpretation of a piece of Granite stone, formed by the direct effects of all of the elements – created from fire, becoming part of the earth, weathered by air and water. HUGO Element is subtle enough to be worn daytime at the office and rocks enough urban sexiness to be worn for an evening out — it's an easy scent to wear. I wrote about it in an earlier post here.

Both of these sets are available exclusively at Macy's.

Thompson Chemists — a True "Mom and Pop" Pharmacy

One of my favorite parts of a European trip is checking out the local pharmacies — always on the hunt for new and unusual skincare products and fragrances. Paris and London have some of the best. When I’m there, I usually stock up on things I won’t find in New York — until now. I recently discovered a “mom and pop” pharmacy in the heart of Soho that carries some of the best (and hard to find) niche brands of skin/hair care for men and women. The shop is called Thompson Chemists, located at 137 Thompson Street, tucked away between West Houston and Prince Street. This is a tiny storefront that is packed with some of the best of the best. A refreshing alternative to Duane Read, Rite Aid and Walgreens. Gary and Jolie, the owners, and their staff, are friendly and informative and the place rocks a real neighborhood vibe.

Some of the brands that caught my eye:
NUXE Paris Soft-Skin Booster Body Scrub (a gentle moisturizing scrub that’s great for dry winter skin) and 24-HR Nutri-hydrating Body Lotion (excellent body moisturizer) are both quite nice.

Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream. "The #1 selling medicated, vitamin-enriched skin cream in Japan." I use this as a hand moisturizer. Really good stuff!

Black Pearl Contouring Face & Eye Cream Serum
This line uses a combination of pearl powder, seaweed and Dead Sea minerals. An excellent moisturizing cream with an extraordinary light texture. The cream is Black Pearl's #1 seller.

They also stock a fabulous French hair care line called Leonor Greyl. Yup, these are the products that celebrity hairstylist Andy Lecompte used on Madonna during her 2009 Sticky & Sweet tour. ‘nuff said.

Also in the line-up; a nice selection of Roger & Gallet as well as one of the top men’s lines from the U.S. — Baxter of California.

So if you’re in the hood, stop by and say ‘hi’ to Gary and the crew. Thompson Chemists is a real NYC find!

Burberry London Gets Dressed Up for the Holidays

Burberry London gets dressed up for the holidays with it’s 2009 Special Edition Eau de Toilette for men. The bottle maintains it’s original, classic and elegant shape with a slight twist — it's “dressed up” with a shiny and glossy charcoal version of Burberry plaid fabric. Very nice and very handsome.

Burberry London is a bright, crisp, fresh, sparkling version of the classic London for Men fragrance. An uplifting cocktail of lemon, green pineapple and blackcurrant buds with a slight hint of plum, reminiscent of Christmas. The drydown, directly inspired from the classic fragrance, rocks a warm, sensual woody character — clear, airy with a vibrant woody-amber facet. The scent is pleasing, subtle and has wonderful lasting power.

Burberry London Limited Edition comes in a 100 ml/3.3 oz bottle and is priced at $70. A very special gift.

Diptyque Philosykos

One of my favorites. Warm, fresh, masculine, slightly sweet and charming… that’s a good description of Diptyque's Philosykos. Imagine the air of a fig grove on a hot summer Mediterranean day. Refreshing. The scent is mildly sweet and creamy with a lot of green notes and a slightly woody-earthy base. A perfect and unexpected holiday scent.

This month, Diptique launched it’s first foray into the solid fragrance market with a handsomely packaged compact solid perfume version of Philosykos. Same wonderful scent as the original in a portable and elegant case. $48 (4.5 g)

I know what boys like. I know what guys want.

Fellas, if you want your partner to find you more attractive, you might start grooming a little more below the neck, not to mention your eyebrows, ears and nostrils. And your "other half” should speak up about what they think looks good. Odds are you will listen.

Those are some of the key findings in a survey released by Remington Products, a leader in men’s grooming and shaving tools. The nationwide poll asked 435 males about their personal grooming habits and 440 females about what male grooming styles they find the most attractive. The results: both men and women prefer a clean-shaven face and said grooming is key to making a first impression. More than half the women (57 percent) think poor grooming is a major turn off – if not a total deal-breaker.

But the sexes are at odds about how much to trim. For example:
Back hair – Nearly three-quarters of the women (71 percent) prefer men at least trim their backs to avoid looking like Neanderthals, and 33 percent would prefer a complete shave. Three-quarters of the men, however, said they don’t.
The butt – Eighty-three percent of women think men should do a little neatening back there, too, but nearly two-thirds of the men (63 percent) said they don’t.
Ears, eyebrows and nose hair – Forty-four percent of women find it troublesome when this hair is left untouched, but nearly a quarter of the men (24 percent) said grooming there isn’t even a factor in whether they think they look their best.
Chest – More than half the women (53 percent) who are casually dating or divorced think a man should at least give his chest a simple trim so it doesn’t look like a sweater. Overall, 40 percent of the women agree. However, 43 percent of the total women surveyed prefer men keep all their chest hair, considering it a sign of masculinity. And 17 percent want a smooth chest without a single hair. For the men, 83 percent said they have just let their chest hair grow.
The, um, groin – Sixty percent of the women who are casually dating said there should be some trimming around the groin, as did more than 56 percent of the women who are younger than 40. Of the total women surveyed, 42 percent prefer that look, but another 42 percent think any grooming down under would comprise a guy’s manliness. The other 16 percent? They’d like it clean as a whistle. Nearly two-thirds of the men (63 percent) said they’re still as hairy as God made them.

One key take away from the survey: men and women should tell each other what styles they think look best. Fifty-two percent of the men said they would consider shaving if it was important to their significant others, and 34 percent of the women said their men do, in fact, need to spend more time grooming. Yet one in five (21 percent) of the women said they wouldn’t broach the topic to avoid hurting feelings.

To test different grooming and hair styles, Remington has created the Face of Success Challenge, an online game centered on creating a “look” or “style” with the help of various Remington and grooming shaving tools. In the game, guys create their own avatar by choosing from a combination of hair styles and facial hair looks then try their skills with the game’s female characters, including the fitness instructor, the blonde bombshell and the girl next door. While playing the game, guys have a conversation with the women, gauge the responses and see how much face time they get. Afterward, a “wingman” offers tips on what might have worked better, including suggestions on how to improve their look with help from Remington.
