HUGO Element Makes Any Song Smell Better

Rock on brother... Here's a great gift idea that sounds good and smells great! This holiday season, the fantastic urban fragrance, HUGO Element, is hooking up with iTunes to add a music soundtrack to this fresh, creative, inspiring and masculine fragrance.

HUGO Element and iTunes rock!
HUGO Element + Limited Edition HUGO Headphones
With purchase of HUGO Element Eau de Toilette 3.0 fl.oz + Shower Gel, receive a pair of limited-edition HUGO headphones. Be in your element, immersed in your own personal soundtrack anytime, anywhere.
HUGO Element + iTunes Giftcard
With purchase of HUGO Element Eau de Toilette, 3.0 fl. oz, receive a $10 iTunes gift card for immediate music download at the iTunes online store. Create the playlist to match your lifestyle.

HUGO Element is a modern take on men’s fragrance — inspired by the four elements. The creative starting point was the scented interpretation of a piece of Granite stone, formed by the direct effects of all of the elements – created from fire, becoming part of the earth, weathered by air and water. HUGO Element is subtle enough to be worn daytime at the office and rocks enough urban sexiness to be worn for an evening out — it's an easy scent to wear. I wrote about it in an earlier post here.

Both of these sets are available exclusively at Macy's.

Thompson Chemists — a True "Mom and Pop" Pharmacy

One of my favorite parts of a European trip is checking out the local pharmacies — always on the hunt for new and unusual skincare products and fragrances. Paris and London have some of the best. When I’m there, I usually stock up on things I won’t find in New York — until now. I recently discovered a “mom and pop” pharmacy in the heart of Soho that carries some of the best (and hard to find) niche brands of skin/hair care for men and women. The shop is called Thompson Chemists, located at 137 Thompson Street, tucked away between West Houston and Prince Street. This is a tiny storefront that is packed with some of the best of the best. A refreshing alternative to Duane Read, Rite Aid and Walgreens. Gary and Jolie, the owners, and their staff, are friendly and informative and the place rocks a real neighborhood vibe.

Some of the brands that caught my eye:
NUXE Paris Soft-Skin Booster Body Scrub (a gentle moisturizing scrub that’s great for dry winter skin) and 24-HR Nutri-hydrating Body Lotion (excellent body moisturizer) are both quite nice.

Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream. "The #1 selling medicated, vitamin-enriched skin cream in Japan." I use this as a hand moisturizer. Really good stuff!

Black Pearl Contouring Face & Eye Cream Serum
This line uses a combination of pearl powder, seaweed and Dead Sea minerals. An excellent moisturizing cream with an extraordinary light texture. The cream is Black Pearl's #1 seller.

They also stock a fabulous French hair care line called Leonor Greyl. Yup, these are the products that celebrity hairstylist Andy Lecompte used on Madonna during her 2009 Sticky & Sweet tour. ‘nuff said.

Also in the line-up; a nice selection of Roger & Gallet as well as one of the top men’s lines from the U.S. — Baxter of California.

So if you’re in the hood, stop by and say ‘hi’ to Gary and the crew. Thompson Chemists is a real NYC find!

Burberry London Gets Dressed Up for the Holidays

Burberry London gets dressed up for the holidays with it’s 2009 Special Edition Eau de Toilette for men. The bottle maintains it’s original, classic and elegant shape with a slight twist — it's “dressed up” with a shiny and glossy charcoal version of Burberry plaid fabric. Very nice and very handsome.

Burberry London is a bright, crisp, fresh, sparkling version of the classic London for Men fragrance. An uplifting cocktail of lemon, green pineapple and blackcurrant buds with a slight hint of plum, reminiscent of Christmas. The drydown, directly inspired from the classic fragrance, rocks a warm, sensual woody character — clear, airy with a vibrant woody-amber facet. The scent is pleasing, subtle and has wonderful lasting power.

Burberry London Limited Edition comes in a 100 ml/3.3 oz bottle and is priced at $70. A very special gift.

Diptyque Philosykos

One of my favorites. Warm, fresh, masculine, slightly sweet and charming… that’s a good description of Diptyque's Philosykos. Imagine the air of a fig grove on a hot summer Mediterranean day. Refreshing. The scent is mildly sweet and creamy with a lot of green notes and a slightly woody-earthy base. A perfect and unexpected holiday scent.

This month, Diptique launched it’s first foray into the solid fragrance market with a handsomely packaged compact solid perfume version of Philosykos. Same wonderful scent as the original in a portable and elegant case. $48 (4.5 g)

I know what boys like. I know what guys want.

Fellas, if you want your partner to find you more attractive, you might start grooming a little more below the neck, not to mention your eyebrows, ears and nostrils. And your "other half” should speak up about what they think looks good. Odds are you will listen.

Those are some of the key findings in a survey released by Remington Products, a leader in men’s grooming and shaving tools. The nationwide poll asked 435 males about their personal grooming habits and 440 females about what male grooming styles they find the most attractive. The results: both men and women prefer a clean-shaven face and said grooming is key to making a first impression. More than half the women (57 percent) think poor grooming is a major turn off – if not a total deal-breaker.

But the sexes are at odds about how much to trim. For example:
Back hair – Nearly three-quarters of the women (71 percent) prefer men at least trim their backs to avoid looking like Neanderthals, and 33 percent would prefer a complete shave. Three-quarters of the men, however, said they don’t.
The butt – Eighty-three percent of women think men should do a little neatening back there, too, but nearly two-thirds of the men (63 percent) said they don’t.
Ears, eyebrows and nose hair – Forty-four percent of women find it troublesome when this hair is left untouched, but nearly a quarter of the men (24 percent) said grooming there isn’t even a factor in whether they think they look their best.
Chest – More than half the women (53 percent) who are casually dating or divorced think a man should at least give his chest a simple trim so it doesn’t look like a sweater. Overall, 40 percent of the women agree. However, 43 percent of the total women surveyed prefer men keep all their chest hair, considering it a sign of masculinity. And 17 percent want a smooth chest without a single hair. For the men, 83 percent said they have just let their chest hair grow.
The, um, groin – Sixty percent of the women who are casually dating said there should be some trimming around the groin, as did more than 56 percent of the women who are younger than 40. Of the total women surveyed, 42 percent prefer that look, but another 42 percent think any grooming down under would comprise a guy’s manliness. The other 16 percent? They’d like it clean as a whistle. Nearly two-thirds of the men (63 percent) said they’re still as hairy as God made them.

One key take away from the survey: men and women should tell each other what styles they think look best. Fifty-two percent of the men said they would consider shaving if it was important to their significant others, and 34 percent of the women said their men do, in fact, need to spend more time grooming. Yet one in five (21 percent) of the women said they wouldn’t broach the topic to avoid hurting feelings.

To test different grooming and hair styles, Remington has created the Face of Success Challenge, an online game centered on creating a “look” or “style” with the help of various Remington and grooming shaving tools. In the game, guys create their own avatar by choosing from a combination of hair styles and facial hair looks then try their skills with the game’s female characters, including the fitness instructor, the blonde bombshell and the girl next door. While playing the game, guys have a conversation with the women, gauge the responses and see how much face time they get. Afterward, a “wingman” offers tips on what might have worked better, including suggestions on how to improve their look with help from Remington.

Andre, I'd like to introduce you to Billy Jealousy

CBS 60 Minutes aired an impressive and heartfelt interview with Andre Agassi last night where he came across as being very articulate and sincere. Someone who had faced demons in his life, took a soul searching journey, perhaps some therapy, then rose above to become a good husband, father and in this stage of his life, a very generous philanthropist. There were some surprising revelations like his dislike of tennis and an introduction to his year-long doubles partner, Crystal Methamphetamine. We also got to see his lighter side as he joked about wearing that very 80’s hairpiece while playing the French Open. It was a good interview and his honesty was charming.

I thought Andre looked great and I like the way he has matured. During the close-ups, it was clear that he was not wearing makeup, which gave the interview a layer of rawness. But throughout the interview, I couldn’t help noticing that Agassi had what appeared to be some serious razor burn. It got me thinking that as easy as razor burn is to avoid, this can happen to anyone.

So here’s my two cents on avoiding razor burn.

Get your beard wet and softened with plenty of warm water. After showering is best. Use a sharp, fresh razor — whether you’re using a double-edge or multi-blade, make sure it’s not dull. This is very important. Use a shaving cream that gives you excellent razor glide like Billy Jealousy Whipped Cream. I’ve used this cream with my Merkur HD double edge razor (traditional shave, with brush) and my multi blade razor (brushless) and got a nick-free shave (without razor burn) each time. This super-slick cream softens and lifts the beard the same way that the original Esquire Grooming Award-winning Billy Jealousy Hydroplane does. Also, with Billy Jealousy Whipped Cream, there is no need for pre-shave oil. It’s that slick. Whipped Cream’s key ingredients which help to glide, hydrate and reduce redness are Glycerin, Licorice Root Extract, Wheat Germ Extract and Lavender Oil. It also rocks a nice clean masculine scent. It’s a good one, I recommend it and I think Andre would like it.

Finish up with an after-shave moisturizer and you’re good to go.

Cut Your Own Hair

Your barber is not going to be happy about this one. Now that do-it-yourself manscaping, hair cutting and trimming are easy and pretty much effortless, more and more guys are foregoing their regular trips to the barber shop and opting for a DIY at-home session of Grooming Duty.

The new Philips Norelco 180 Degree Clipper would be a nice addition to your at-home hair cutting arsenal. With a 180 degree pivoting head, this clipper makes hair clipping easy, even in the hard to reach areas. The pivoting comb follows the contour of your head, making it easy to reach every spot, including those you can’t see. It also does a nice job trimming below the waist (except the balls...NEVER use an electric clipper on your balls) and chest areas. Using only two comb attachments, the clipper can adjust to 10 length settings, up to 7/8 inch. The self-sharpening blades give a clean cut every time and it comes with a precision trimmer to finish off the look with contouring and touch-ups.

Nothing can replace chewing the fat with your barber, but Philips Norelco offers an easy and economical way to get your Grooming Groove on at home.

The Philips Norleco QC5170 180 Hair Clipper is available at Amazon, Target and for under 40 bucks.

LAB SERIES Active Hand Cream

Winter is just around the corner and while some guys might be thinking about football, snow tires and maybe a new sweater — all I can think about is how dry my skin gets. My legs, arms and especially my hands become D-R-Y as a bone. Anyhoodle, as a former boy scout, I have a mantra that goes something like this —“Be prepared.” So last week I took my humidifier out of storage and stocked up on my favorite hand cream — LAB SERIES Active Hand Cream. The cream is lightweight, rich and non-greasy. It soaks into the skin quickly and leaves your hands feeling healthy and soothed. It also rocks a nice, pleasant neutral-clean scent that doesn’t enter the room before you do. I really like this stuff.

This winter, be a good scout and take good care of your mitts. A tube of it sits on my desk.

Matte For Men Hand Crafted Natural Cleansing Bar

One of the best parts about writing this blog is that I get to try some pretty cool products before they hit the market. The good guys over at Matte For Men sent me their new cleansing bar to try and review – Matte For Men Hand Crafted Natural Cleansing Bar. I had it sitting on my desk for a few days and the scent is absolutely wonderful, clean and unusually masculine without being spicy or heavy. It has a subtle organic lavender scent — very clean and sexy. Matte For Men is a company that specializes in skin care for all types of guys with a line of products that are unique, easy to use and effective. Matte For Men Complete Head Care Lotion is a moisturizer that I love and use daily. It’s an all-in-one product that’s loaded with antioxidant-enriched moisture and it leaves your skin and scalp with no shine. The new Hand Crafted Natural Cleansing Bar is a nice addition to their stellar line. This mild soap does a fantastic job of cleaning face and body without drying. That’s something to keep in mind with the dry winter months coming up. It produces plenty of fine suds and also contains oatmeal for a light skin exfoliation. Since this soap is hand made, it has the quality of a French-milled soap and will last longer than other mass-marketed brands.

I highly recommend this one! MFM Hand Crafted Natural Cleansing Bar will be available in November. Check out the whole Matte For Men line at or at Sephora.
