Odin Frgrances: 04 Petrana

I spent last Sunday working the streets of Soho… brunch, shopping, people watching… and ended up at Odin on Lafayette Street — one of my favorite NYC stores (flashback). The collection of clothes, shoes, accessories and fragrances are so well edited that I would be stoked owning anything in the store. While there, I discovered the latest addition to their line of signature scents — it’s called 04 Petrana. The scent is absolutely rich, complex and so well layered that I cannot stop sniffing my wrist. It opens with a very earthy and slightly spicy pink pepper note and then shifts into a fresh unisex floral (black iris, violet and heliotrope) and finishes out with a sensual balance of orris root, vetiver and white musk. Really wonderful and quite amazing — a beautiful balance of the traditional masculine and feminine. 04 Petrana is a well thought out beautifully executed fragrance.

The good news is that with the launch of 04 Petrana, Odin New York Fragrances has branched out and are now available at Barneys New York and Barneys.com. In Europe, 04 Petrana is exclusively sold at Browns in London and Colette and French Trotters in Paris. And of course they're also available at Odin New York, Pas de Deux, Aedes de Venustas and Hershleifer's in New York, Louis Boston in Boston, Forty Five Ten in Dallas, Carrots in San Francisco. Enjoy!

Razor Bumps: Knock ‘em out faster with Bump Patrol

I take shaving seriously and as a guy with light skin and a moderately course beard, I’m only occasionally prone to razor bumps and burn, usually on my neck. They suck! Anyone who has had them knows they can sting and look “not awesome’. Razor bumps, also known as Pleudofolliculitis Barbae, predominantly affects African-American, Latino and Mediterranean men, whose
beards are typically course, curly and prone to ingrown hairs, In fact, according to research conducted by the U.S. Army, approximately 80 percent of all African-American men experience razor bumps. Some men actually think they’re allergic to razors or believe nothing can fix the problem. When I get razor bumps, I bring out the armed forces for a counter attack and by that I mean it’s time to bring out Bump Patrol. It’s loaded with soothing agents to reduce inflammation, antiseptics to reduce bacteria and prevent infection and emollients for a smooth appearance.

There aren’t enough hours in the day to tell you how much I love this product. Bump Patrol's anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and conditioning affects happen right after the first shave. The line is fully stocked and includes hydrating shave gels and three strengths of their aftershave razor bump treatment: Maximum Strength, Sensitive and Original.

If you're prone to razor bumps, here are a few smooth moves to prevent this situation:
1 Tweeze ingrown hairs and apply Bump Patrol directly to the sites.
2 Use a hydrating shave gel and a high-quality multi-blade razor on a moistened, warm face.
3 Shave in the same direction of the beard’s growth. Never go against the grain.
4 Complete each shave with an application of Bump Patrol aftershave wherever the razor touched.

I also use Bump Patrol on my back after a waxing to avoid any ingrown hairs. And ladies, I think this would work well after a leg shave, bikini wax or a Brazilian. Keep it smooth.

Bump Patrol is available at Walgreens, Walmart, Target and CVS.

L'Occitane: Clean is Sexy

GlamMan divides body cleansers into two categories: liquid and bar soaps. My usage ratio for the two is 70/30. 70% bar soap and 30% liquid cleanser. So when I reach for a bar soap, I go for the best made product…I always go for French soaps. They’re simply the best. The suds are rich, luxurious and, dense, and the fine bubbles give a good run for the money (the bar lasts a super long time). The soap gets my skin clean, and fresh without ever drying. Unlike most liquid cleansers, bar soaps use scented fats to thoroughly deep clean the skin. I can best explain the process in my non-scientific way; a molecule of fat mixed with a molecule of water removes the dirt from the skin. Get the picture?

My favorite French milled bar soaps are made by a company called L’Occitane. I’ve been using L’Occitane soap for many years and they are the best of the best. Shea butter and pure vegetable oils are used to clean and moisturize the skin — even oily skin. L’Occitane soaps are perfect for year-round use, but they’re especially good in the cold months when indoor heat and outdoor cold air can really dry out the skin. The scents are also wonderfully clean and sexy. After all, clean IS sexy.

A Tan For All Seasons

Well guys, it’s that time of year again when the air is getting a little chilly and the cardigans are making their way out of the closet... and summer is a becoming a distant memory. I’m not complaining. Early Fall is my favorite time of year, but along with the cool weather comes another sign that summer is over — every hard-earned smidge of color on my legs, arms and the rest of my bod is disappearing from my skin. All the color that took months of gradual tanning (with sunscreen) is all gone within a matter of weeks. My tan is like Mariah Carey's “I Don’t Wanna Cry”… it starts out quietly, then there’s the slow build, it gets loud and proud and full of life in a “Baby Jesus, this is GREAT!” kind of way… and then it’s over. Done.

I’ve discovered a wonderfully natural-looking self-tanning product to remedy the situation. No, not The Situation.... my situation. Beautisol All Seasons Glow self-tanning lotion. It gives me that glow without looking orange, fake or streaky. Now I’m not talking about the DJ Pauly D, the Situation or the Snookie kind of faux-glow but more of a tan that looks healthy, natural, even…. and hot. And as a bonus, it smells good too, unlike some of the other toxic smelling tanners that smell like they’re actually burning your skin. The All Seasons Glow “system” comes nicely packaged. To prep my skin, I used Beautisol’s body scrub called Go Slough Yourself. I recommend this step to prepare the skin for even coverage. It also comes with gloves and a DVD to guide you to getting the natural color.

Why: It’s easy to use and every guy looks better with some natural looking color.
Where: Beautisol
How much: $39.00… and worth it.

Product sample was furnished by the company's PR firm.

Wolverine 1000 Mile 721 LTD

Not really grooming, but another one of my favorite things — cordovan shoes. Wolverine 1000 Mile collection is unveiling a limited edition boot under the imprint 721LTD (named as a nod to the original 1000 Mile boot reference number). To celebrate the release they commissioned a short film series to document the process of creating the 721LTD boots.

Blush, Foundation, Eyeliner...."I Do."

I'm all for enhancing your look and that includes adding color with a bronzer or self tanner, but some things are just wrong. Like a guy going in full makeup to his nuptials. Check out this article from The Good Men Project on saying "I Do," in eye shadow. As Sasha Baron Cohen's character BrĂ¼no would say "Ish don't think so."

Carolina Herrera Spring 2011... and MADONNA!

Today will go down in history as one of those special days where all I can say is... wow! It's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week here in NYC and I started the day, thanks to my good friend Miro, by going to the Carolina Herrera Spring 2011 show at Lincoln Center. The show was classic, beautiful and first class all the way. Afterwards, Miro, Angel, Ana and I went to lunch... bloody Mary's and a yummy grilled shrimp salad. Later on, Ana and I strolled through Central Park to the East Side where Madonna is filming her new movie WE. Yes, we saw Madonna! Days like this make me love living in New York City.

Renovation... not GLAM, more like a scary dream with a happy ending

Ok, so I'm doing some living room, bedroom and kitchen renovation on my new apartment and let me tell you, I should've moved out for a few days. Everything is covered in plastic and there's this white dust all over everything! The good thing is that I will rid the new place of the "dusty peach" color that the previous owner had on the walls. I'm going for a warm, creamy, soft grey for the living room — Benjamin Moore Abalone. The bedroom is going to be painted in a color by Donald Kaufman — it's just called "37". So chic! Just a number. The color is a silvery-blue-green. It is the most beautiful color. It's a very cleaned up version of the wall color of Carrie Bradshaw's bedroom in Sex & the City. If you've never heard of Donald Kaufman paint you're not alone. I thought the brand was an urban myth. I heard mumblings about this super-pigmented paint a while back, but never knew that it actually existed. The paint is FLOODED with pigment. Where a standard wall paint might have 3 pigments to create the color, Donald Kaufman uses around 13. THIR-TEEN. That means that there is so much pigment in the paint that it actually changes color depending on the light and angle you view it in. Oh, and I'm also getting these Michael S. Smith Eiffel double wall sconces for the living room...

and these Siena sconces for the bedroom... which are going to look pretty phenomenal on Donald Kaufman 37.

I'll take more pictures when it's finished!

Dove Men+Care Journey to Comfort

Dove Men+Care holds a secure spot as one of my top go-to brands when I want to rock a high-quality body wash at a drug store price. I’ve been a fan of Dove Men+Care since it came out — it gets major bonus points for it's performance and fresh, modern, clean scent. It rinses off nicely too, but it was the scent and moisturizing effect that won me over in the first place. The line includes a body and face wash, bar soap and scrubby tool that is a real treat on the shoulders, back, arms and legs. Go get one.

I also like that Dove uses a dude with a shaved head to promote it’s good-for-the-skin products. Check out this video of St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols as he talks about his “Journey to Comfort”. This guy is a hero on and off the field. The “Journey to Comfort” campaign celebrates Pujols' journey to total comfort and features personal and professional moments of his journey to comfort. It celebrates his achievements and experiences that have led him to a level of personal comfort including “unsung moments” I think all men can relate to. It's a nice clip — watch it at full screen.

Get Banged!

When a style icon like Marc Jacobs comes out with a new men’s fragrance — his last fragrance for men came out almost a decade ago — it’s a BIG deal. BANG, Marc Jacobs new fragrance is a hit and definitely worth the wait. I liked this scent immediately and have been wearing, sniffing and dreaming about it from the minute I tore through the box, pulled out the bottle and landed the first spray on my wrist and chest. The scent is smoking! BANG… of course there’s the double-meaning, the cheeky name and the over-the-top bottle design (looks like it’s been PUNCHED!) but underneath it all lies a very complex, sophisticated and sexy fragrance – one that is more likely found in a limited production niche fragrance, not a mass market international brand like Marc Jacobs. Bang is all about pepper, yes pepper. White pepper, pink pepper and black pepper. The peppery notes are nicely balanced and smoothed out with a mix of masculine woods, vetiver, benzoin, white moss and patchouli. I'm usually not a big fan of peppery fragrances but this one is so well done and very easy on the nose. BANG also stays close to the skin so there is no wafting sillage (the scent trail you leave behind)....this means your boo won't have to break out the breathing apparatus to get "on your bus".

We know that Bang is a winner and a seriously good fragrance... but here is where the fun starts. In the spirit of Bang, Marc Jacobs launched the Facebook game, "Bang You're It". Like his fashion, "Bang You're It" is free for interpretation and allows users to bang friends profile pictures and get banged in return in order to rack up points. By banging someone, you are essentially banging their profile picture with the same impacted look as the Bang fragrance bottle. The more bangs, the more points.

Get even more by points by doing the following:
• Get banged by people from other countries
• Get banged after midnight

Each time a users profile is banged, there's the option to share it via their Facebook wall for all to see and to spread the word about who is interested in them and vice versa. Added bonus? One bang player will be chosen at random daily to win a selection of stylish prizes, including Marc Jacobs Bang fragrance, clothing, or even a trip to NYC to attend the Marc Jacobs Fashion show! To play the game, click here.

Marc Jacobs Bang is available at Bloomingdale's and Marc Jacobs boutiques.

The Bluebeards Revenge: Shave Cream for Tough Stubble

Nothing gets my attention like a company so confident in the strength and quality of its product that it can have a sense of humor about it, making it that much more fun to use. My latest discovery is a premium shave cream from the UK called The Bluebeards Revenge: the ultimate shaving experience for real men. Bluebeards is hands-down one of the best shave creams I’ve used and gets major points for its texture, glide and bonus points for its clean, attractive scent — and packaging is tongue-in-cheek humor at its best. But don’t let the packaging fool you. Bluebeards is a serious high-quality, paraben free “tough on stubble” shave cream that uses a new ingredient called Decelerine. Decerlerine is scientifically proven to reduce the growth of hair over a period of time, so every time a man shaves with The Bluebeards Revenge, he is actively delaying hair growth. Over a 60-day period, this can reduce the growth of stubble by up to 40%, meaning a man can get on with what he does best - manliness - without sporting a 5 o’clock shadow by lunchtime. This is pretty exciting news for anyone, like me, with a thick beard.

Learn more about The Bluebeards Revenge at www.bluebeards-revenge.co.uk. At this moment, Bluebeards Revenge is only available in the UK but can be purchased online at www.shaving-shack.com Check it out.

Bulldog — Man’s Best Friend

Who let the dogs out?! I just got turned on to a natural men’s grooming line from the UK — it’s called Bulldog. WOOF!! Bulldog is a pretty awesome, reasonably-priced, high-performance line that offers men a natural skincare/grooming option while helping to reduce the number of man-made chemicals in our bathrooms. How cool is that?

Bulldog Natural Grooming was founded in 2006 by Simon Duffy (33) and Rhodri Ferrier (31). The idea for Bulldog came over a pint of beer in their local pub. Both agreed that unless you’re a geography teacher or a communist revolutionary you’ll have to shave sometime, but even though there were hundreds of male grooming products out there, for them they just weren’t cutting the English mustard. They wanted products designed by men for men, that got the job done the right way. After all, even if you’re a bulldog there’s no need to be a wrinkly old beast.

Bulldog comes in cheeky no-nonsense packaging and at a pretty amazing price — starting at just $8.99

The Bulldog range includes:
Moisturiser (yup, that the British spelling) – containing 8 essential oils, Green Tea and Green Algae as an exceptional natural skin moisturizer. $13.99

Face Scrub – containing 7 essential oils, coconut shell and pumice for AMAZE natural exfoliation. $9.99

Shave Gel - containing 7 essential oils, Aloe Vera, Jojoba, and Konjac Mannan to give a smooth and moisturizing shave every time. $8.99

Face Wash – containing 8 essential oils and the powerful natural anti-oxidant Green Tea, which refreshes and cleans your face. $9.99

Post Shave Balm - containing 8 essential oils and Rosehip oil to nourish and soothe skin after shaving. $10.99

Bulldog is widely available all over the UK and recently launched its range of ethical products in Whole Foods in Boston. Can’t wait for it to come to NYC’s Whole Foods.

Alford & Hoff: James Bond Style Grooming

Summer 2010, NYC: Sweltering heat and humidity has forced me to skip some of my regular daytime moisturizers (at least for a little while) and opt for something more lightweight, yet hard working and hydrating and what the hell, a little SPF would be nice too. Not such an easy thing to find in the ever-expanding universe of men’s grooming products. But, ahhhh, the answer to my need comes from a very handsomely styled company called Alford & Hoff. This line is sold exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and alfordandhoff.com. And just to put things in perspective, the Alford & Hoff line is what I would imagine sitting on James Bond’s dresser or tucked away in his high tech dopp kit. I’ve been a huge fan of Alford & Hoff’s Microdermabrasion and have written and tweeted about it many times. The stuff is truly amazing and if you haven’t already tried it, I urge you to get on it ASAP. You will be a new man. But in the summer of 2010, I’m all about the lightweight and effective moisturizer. Alford & Hoff Moisturizer (Sirtuin-Activating Hydrating Cream) is an emulsion that contains emollients and high-tech humectants with a boost the anti-aging SIR2stac Complex – it moisturizes for dramatically looking younger skin and the result lasts throughout the day. I love this moisturizer. Check it out.

Love at First Sight...Calibre de Cartier

My dreams of someday owning a Patek Philippe have been rocked a little since I saw this watch from the new Cartier men's watch collection, Calibre de Cartier. Does anyone really need a Cartier watch? The answer is yes. This one is too handsome to let get-away. Cartier manages to create classic timepieces with a modern edge and I think the Calibre de Cartier is pretty major. What do you think?

So who is this quintessential Cartier man? Daring, elegant, precise and most importantly, on time.

Check out this video for the collection...
